Originally from China and having been in North America for ten years, I’m still experiencing difficulties in perceiving the whole picture of the new culture, as if there were a piece of glass between the world and me. On the one hand, I am fascinated with the new culture as a diaspora and I am always full of curiosity to learn more. On the other hand, the cultural barrier seems to be hard to break. In my “reflection” painting series, I use people as the subject and the glass window as a metaphor to reflect my fragmented impression of the new culture, which is sometimes clear and sometimes blurry. The style is realistic, but it is also surreal and abstract. |
